## Why Servo Press Operation Is Different
Servo press operators need additional training compared to mechanical press operators. The programmable motion profile means operators can inadvertently create unsafe conditions if they modify parameters without understanding the implications.
## Essential Operator Skills
**Motion profile basics:**
- Understand what forming speed, approach speed, and dwell time mean
- Know which parameters they are allowed to adjust (typically only SPM and dwell time)
- Know which parameters require engineering approval to change (forming speed, tonnage limits)
**Tonnage monitoring:**
- Read the tonnage display and understand high/low limits
- Know what actions to take when a tonnage alarm occurs
- Never bypass tonnage alarms without engineering approval
**Die protection:**
- Understand what each die protection sensor monitors
- Know the correct response to each die protection fault
- Never defeat die protection sensors
## Safety Rules Specific to Servo Presses
1. Never reach into the die area when the press is in auto mode — servo presses can restart faster than mechanical presses
2. Verify E-stop function at start of each shift
3. Never modify motion profile parameters without engineering sign-off
4. If press stops unexpectedly, do not restart until root cause is identified
## Training Program Structure
- Day 1: Press overview, safety systems, E-stop procedure
- Day 2: HMI operation, job setup, tonnage monitoring
- Day 3: Die change procedure, die protection setup
- Day 4: Supervised production run
- Certification: written test + practical assessment
