AIDA vs Komatsu Servo Press: Which to Choose for Automotive Stamping

Both AIDA and Komatsu make excellent servo presses for automotive applications, but they have different strengths. Here is a practical comparison based on running both in production.

## Drive System Architecture

AIDA uses a direct-drive servo motor connected to the eccentric through a gear reducer. This gives very precise control but the gear reducer adds a compliance element.

Komatsu H1F series uses a servo motor driving a link mechanism. The link mechanism provides a mechanical advantage that allows a smaller motor to generate high forming force, but the force-stroke curve is less linear.

## Motion Profile Flexibility

AIDA: Excellent. The direct drive architecture allows very precise control of velocity at any point in the stroke. Good for applications requiring precise forming speed control (AHSS, springback-sensitive parts).

Komatsu: Good. The link mechanism limits the range of achievable motion profiles compared to direct drive, but the standard profiles cover most automotive applications.

## Tonnage Range and Availability

AIDA DSF series: 80 to 3000 tons, widely available globally, strong service network in North America and Europe.

Komatsu H1F series: 80 to 2000 tons, stronger presence in Japan and Asia, growing North American presence.

## Maintenance Considerations

AIDA: Gear reducer requires oil changes every 2 years. Servo motor is accessible for maintenance. Spare parts available globally.

Komatsu: Link mechanism requires periodic inspection of pin and bushing wear. Generally lower maintenance than eccentric drive presses.

## Cost Comparison

For equivalent tonnage, AIDA and Komatsu are within 10-15% of each other on purchase price. The bigger cost difference comes from:
- Installation: AIDA presses tend to be taller, may require pit or higher ceiling
- Tooling: if you are transferring dies from mechanical presses, check shut height compatibility
- Training: both require specialized training, factor in 2-3 weeks per operator/maintenance tech

## Recommendation

For AHSS and springback-critical applications: AIDA DSF series.
For high-volume progressive die work where motion profile flexibility is less critical: either works well, choose based on local service support.

We run both. Aida DSF for our high-precision connector line, Komatsu H1F for structural stamping. If I had to pick one for automotive: Komatsu for anything above 400T, Aida for anything below. Komatsu's link drive gives better dwell characteristics on large tonnage deep draws.

Spare parts cost is a factor nobody talks about. Aida parts are 15-20% more expensive than Komatsu in our experience. But Aida's parts availability is better —most common items ship same day from their US warehouse. Komatsu sometimes takes 2-3 weeks for non-stock items.

Good comparison. I'd add one dimension that matters a lot in practice: the control system UX. AIDA's AMADA-based controller has a steeper learning curve but gives you more granular control over the motion profile - you can define up to 20 segments per stroke with independent speed/force limits on each. Komatsu's controller is more intuitive out of the box but somewhat more limited in profile complexity. For a shop doing frequent die changeovers with different motion profiles, AIDA's flexibility pays off. For a dedicated line running the same part 24/7, Komatsu's simplicity is actually an advantage - less chance of an operator accidentally changing something they shouldn't. On the maintenance side, one thing we've noticed: AIDA's direct-drive motors run hotter than Komatsu's link-drive setup at equivalent tonnage because the motor is doing more work through the full stroke. The link mechanism in Komatsu provides mechanical advantage near BDC, so the motor can be smaller for the same rated force. This means lower energy consumption and less thermal stress on the motor. Over a 10-year life, that adds up.
