Servo Drive Parameter Backup and Restore Procedures

Servo drive parameters represent months or years of tuning work. Losing them to a drive failure without a backup means starting from scratch — a costly and time-consuming process. Here is how to back up and restore parameters for the most common servo drive brands.

## Why Backup Matters

Servo drive parameters include:
- Motor tuning gains (position, velocity, current loops)
- Electronic gear ratios
- Torque limits and speed limits
- I/O assignments
- Custom motion profiles
- Safety function configurations

A drive failure without backup can mean weeks of re-commissioning time.

## Fanuc Servo Drives

**Backup via SRAM backup unit:**
1. Power off the drive
2. Insert SRAM backup card
3. Power on — parameters automatically copy to card
4. Store card in a safe location

**Backup via PC (FANUC SERVO GUIDE):**
1. Connect PC via RS-232 or Ethernet
2. Open SERVO GUIDE software
3. Select Drive > Parameter Backup
4. Save as .prm file with date in filename

## Mitsubishi MR-J4/J5 Series

**Via MR Configurator2:**
1. Connect USB cable to drive
2. Open MR Configurator2
3. Parameter > Read from servo amplifier
4. File > Save As — use format: PRESS_MODEL_DATE.mrc2

**Via GOT HMI:**
If a GOT terminal is connected, use the drive backup function in the utility menu.

## Yaskawa Sigma-7

**Via SigmaWin+:**
1. Connect via USB
2. Parameters > Upload from Drive
3. Save as .pprm file
4. Also backup the motor nameplate data separately

## Best Practices

- Back up after every parameter change
- Store backups in three locations: local PC, network drive, USB stick kept with the press
- Label files clearly: PRESS_ID_DRIVE_AXIS_DATE.ext
- Test restore procedure on a spare drive before you need it in an emergency
- Include parameter backup in your annual maintenance checklist

## Restore Procedure

Always verify the replacement drive is the same model and firmware version before restoring. Parameter files from different firmware versions may cause faults or unexpected behavior. Contact the manufacturer if firmware versions differ.

Cannot stress this enough. We had a Yaskawa drive fail on a Friday afternoon. No parameter backup. Took until Wednesday to get the press running again because we had to re-tune everything from scratch. Now we back up after every parameter change and store copies in 3 places: USB in the cabinet, network drive, and printed hardcopy.

We added drive parameter backup to our quarterly PM checklist. Also worth noting: some drives (Siemens S120 in particular) store parameters in the memory card, not the drive itself. If you replace the drive but keep the card, parameters transfer automatically. But if the card fails, you lose everything. Back up the card too.
