## Why Foundation Matters

A servo press generates dynamic forces during forming. Without proper foundation, the press will vibrate, accuracy will degrade, and the building structure may be damaged.

## Foundation Design

**Rule of thumb:** Foundation mass should be 3-5x press weight for presses up to 500T.

Example: 200T servo press weighs approximately 15,000 kg. Foundation should be 45,000-75,000 kg of concrete.

**Concrete specification:** Minimum C25/30 (25 MPa compressive strength). Use vibration-damping mounts between press and foundation.

**Anchor bolts:** M36-M48 depending on press size. Embed depth: minimum 600mm. Use chemical anchors for retrofit installations.

## Leveling Procedure

1. Place press on foundation with leveling bolts
2. Level slide surface to within 0.05mm per 1000mm in both directions
3. Grout foundation bolts with non-shrink grout
4. Allow grout to cure 72 hours minimum before tightening anchor bolts
5. Re-check level after tightening (tightening can shift press slightly)
6. Final level check: 0.02mm per 1000mm

## Alignment Checks After Installation

- Slide parallelism to bolster: 0.02mm per 300mm
- Slide perpendicularity to bolster: 0.02mm per 300mm
- BDC repeatability: run 20 strokes, std dev < 0.01mm

## Utilities

- Power: dedicated transformer recommended for presses above 100T
- Compressed air: 6-8 bar, 200 L/min for counterbalance and pneumatic clutch
- Cooling water: 10-20 L/min at 20-25°C for drive cabinet cooling

Foundation mass should be 3-5x the press weight for stamping applications. Undersized foundations transmit vibration to the building and neighboring equipment. I've seen a 200T press on an undersized foundation cause a CMM in the next room to go out of calibration from the vibration.

Leveling is critical and often rushed. Use precision machinist levels (0.02mm/m sensitivity) on the bolster surface, not a carpenter's level. Check in both X and Y directions. Re-check after 1 month of production —the foundation settles slightly under dynamic load and you'll need to re-shim.

The CMM calibration story is a great example of why this matters. On the foundation settling point - we go further and specify a 2-week loaded settling period before final alignment. Run the press at production tonnage and SPM for 2 weeks, then do your precision leveling. Otherwise you're chasing re-shims for months. One thing nobody mentioned: isolation joints. If your servo press foundation is physically connected to the building slab, vibration will transmit no matter how massive the foundation is. We spec a 25mm expansion joint filled with closed-cell foam around the entire press foundation perimeter. Cuts transmitted vibration by 60-70%. Cost is trivial compared to the foundation pour itself. Also for alignment - don't just check the bolster. Check parallelism between the bolster and slide at BDC under load. Use four dial indicators at the corners, bring the slide down to working height under ~20% tonnage, and measure. Spec is typically 0.05mm/m or tighter for precision work. If it's out, you have a crown/bed deflection issue that shimming the feet won't fix.
