Drive parameter backup is one of the most overlooked maintenance tasks on servo press systems. When a drive fails and must be replaced, having a current parameter backup reduces downtime from days to hours.
## What Parameters Need Backup
**Motion controller parameters:**
- Axis configuration (gear ratios, encoder resolution, direction)
- Motion profiles (speed, acceleration, dwell settings)
- Position limits and software travel limits
- Homing parameters
**Servo drive parameters:**
- Motor data (rated current, speed, torque)
- Control loop gains (speed loop, position loop)
- Fault response settings
- I/O assignments
**Safety parameters (if applicable):**
- Safe torque off (STO) configuration
- Safe limited speed (SLS) settings
- These often require separate backup and re-validation after restore
## Backup Methods by Brand
**Siemens S120 (STARTER/TIA Portal):**
1. Connect PC to drive via PROFIBUS or Ethernet
2. STARTER: Project > Upload from Target Device
3. Save project file (.zip) ??includes all parameters
4. Also backup via drive front panel: p0977=1 (save to non-volatile memory)
**Yaskawa Sigma-7 (SigmaWin+):**
1. Connect via USB
2. Parameter > Save to File
3. Save as .pprm file
**Fanuc (SRAM backup):**
1. SYSTEM > SRAM backup
2. Save to CF card or USB
3. Includes all CNC and servo parameters
**Mitsubishi MR-J4 (MR Configurator2):**
1. Parameter > Read from Servo Amplifier
2. File > Save
## Backup Schedule
- After any parameter change: immediate backup
- Monthly: scheduled backup even if no changes
- Before any maintenance: backup current state
- After commissioning: archive "as-commissioned" backup separately
Store backups in at least 2 locations: local PC and network share or cloud storage.
